Operating Expense Ratios
Formula
Operating Expense ÷ Net Revenue
Definition
Operating Expense Ratios measure operating expenses as a percentage of net revenue. They can be evaluated in total or by functional category, such as Sales & Marketing, Research & Development, and General & Administrative expenses.
These ratios provide a view of scale of corporate overhead relative to revenue.
Interpretation
Changes in Operating Expense Ratios can indicate how a company's cost structure evolves as it scales. Declining ratios may indicate operating leverage as revenue grows faster than expenses, while rising ratios may reflect increased investment or declining cost efficiency.
The appropriate level varies significantly by company stage, growth strategy, and business model. The trend and mix of spending are therefore generally more informative than any single absolute percentage.
